So the oil painting class on Friday's offered by the ward office didn't work out. As it turns out, we had to pay a small monthly membership fee, which Sunmi and I agreed to do. However, when we learned that there is no instruction, we left. Apparently, the members, mostly older housewifes, have formed their own elite club and all they do is use the room to paint for a few hours and then eat lunch there as well. All the teacher does is tell you to choose a photo to paint, circulate and comment now and then; I'm not saying that's bad but I'm certain it's not teaching. Furthermore, the 'student' or 'club members' keep bringing her gifts like food and money.
Both Sunmi and I are teachers and neither of us would simply give a book to a student and say, "Here you are. Now go learn English!"
Needless to say, Sunmi and I stated our disapproval and left but we did get back in full the fee for the first month that we had paid.

They say when one door closes, another opens. This week I finally landed my first freelance writing gig. I'm writing listening test questions for an ESL institute. It's a little extra money and all work is done from home via email. Plus, the director is excellent and when she says something, it happens.
So you got to take the bitter with the better.
